How to Share Your Faith

Series: How (Part 8 of 9)

Pastor David Holland

Sunday, August 20, 2017

Acts 1:8; Acts 4:18-20

Why do we need to share the Gospel?

  1. God commands it. It is His plan to reach the world.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’”   Matthew 28:18-20 NIV

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”  Acts 1:8 NIV

  1. Because that is what you do with GOOD NEWS.

Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! 20 As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”  Acts 4:18-20

  1. Because there are SO MANY who are lost.

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”  Matthew 9:37-38 NIV

  1. Because people cannot hear it unless someone shares it.

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

Romans 10:13-15 NIV

What (content) do I share?

  1. God loves you and has a plan for you!

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  John 3:16

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.  John 10:10

  1. Here’s the problem: man is sinful and separated from God. Our brokenness and this broken world are a result of our sin.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.  Romans 3:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

  1. God sent His Son to die for your sins!

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Romans 5:8 NIV

  1. Question: Would you like to receive God’s forgiveness?

-Repent and Believe.

  1. A Prayer of Commitment Is a Great Way to Begin This Relationship with Jesus.

“Dear God,
I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness.
I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe that He died
for my sin and that you raised Him to life.
I want to trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord,
from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will.
I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.”

How do I Share the Gospel?

The word “Gospel” means “Good News.”

(Peter and John) “As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

  1. Sharing the Gospel begins with three things.
  2. A desire to be obedient to God.
  3. Love and compassion for those far from God.
  4. An opportunity

  1. Ready yourself.

“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” 1 Peter 3:15 NIV

  1. Always be prepared” – Know how to tell someone about the Good News
  2. show “gentleness and respect

  1. Creating Spiritual Conversations
  2. The Spontaneous
  3. The Planned

  1. Share your story and the gospel story.
  2. Your Salvation Story
  3. The Gospel Story

  1. Helpful Hints
  2. Trust that the Holy Spirit will GUIDE you and EMPOWER you.

“…do not worry about how or…what you are to say; for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.” Luke 12:11-12.

  1. It really helps if the one you share with knows you CARE for them.

  1. Your Role, God’s Role, and Their Role

I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. 1 Cor. 3:6-7 NIV

  1. Some Thing to Avoid

-Religious Language

-Air of Superiority; Patronizing

-Shaming/Guilt

  1. Dealing with your Fears

“I was before you in weakness and fear and with much trembling. But it wasn’t my persuasive words that brought you to Christ. It was the power of the Holy Spirit.”

1 Cor. 2:3-6

  1. It is not unusual to be afraid.
  2. What if I say the wrong thing?

But it wasn’t my persuasive words that brought you to Christ.”

  1. What if my friend asks me a question I can’t answer?

He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!” John 9:25 NIV

  1. Tidal Creek Evangelism Strategy: 3-2-1 GO

-Pray for 3 friends far from God

-Care for 2 friends with your life.

-Share with 1 friend your story and the Gospel story

Romans 12:1-2

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:1-2 NIV

Key words: “the renewing of your mind.”

  • The will of the God is the glory of God.

The West Minster Shorter Catechism says: The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

  • The Two Wills of God
  1. God’s Sovereign Will

My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” Matthew 26:39

“Truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.”

Acts 4:27-28

  1. God’s Will of Command

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”  Matthew 7:21 NIV

It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality.

1 Thessalonians 4:3 NIV

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

  1. Seek to Know and Obey as much of God’s stated will as possible.

Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.   1 Thessalonians 5:16

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.  Colossians 3:23 NIV

  1. The Importance of Scripture and a “renewed mind.”

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.  Romans 12:2

  1. Seek Godly Counsel and Community

Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.  Proverbs 11:4

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.  Proverbs 27:17 NIV

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.  Hebrews 10:24-25

  1. Pay attention to how God has wired you.

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.  1 Peter 4:10

How to Overcome Temptation

Series: How (Part 6 of 9)

Pastor David Holland

Sunday, August 6, 2017

1 Corinthians 10:11-13

So allow me to lay some FOUNDATIONS for our discussion.

  1. God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

  1. Satan hates you and wants to destroy you.

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.  1 Peter 5:8 NLT

  1. Satan cannot violate your free will

The only authority he has in your life is the authority you give him by your doubt or your disobedience or territory that you yield to him.

Each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desires.

James 1:12

How to Overcome Temptation (1 Corinthians 10:11-13)

11These things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age.

12 If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. 13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

1 Corinthians 10:11-13 NLT

Verse 11

11These things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age.

Verse 12

12 If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall.

Overconfidence and Ignorance

are two of the biggest challenges when it comes to overcoming temptation.

Overcoming temptation starts with identifying and admitting your sinful desires. The big three, are mentioned in 1 John 2:16.

For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.

1 John 2:16 NIV

             These big 3 are:

                           -The Lust of the Flesh

                           -The Lust of the Eyes

                           -The Pride of Life

We need to identify the

patterns of temptation

.

Questions we need to ask ourselves:

Number one, when are you most tempted?

Second, what are my temptation triggers?

What are those temptation triggers that trigger the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye and the pride of life?

Jesus said watch and pray so that you do not fall into temptation.

SEVEN WAYS to be “on guard” against temptation.

Number one, guard your heart.

Number two, Jesus if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.

Number three, don’t give the devil a foothold.

Number four, the best offense is a good defense.

Let the thief no longer steal but rather let him labor doing honest work with his own hands. Eph. 4:28

This is the Replacement Principle.

Number five, fasting breaks the yoke of slavery.

Number six, get into God’s Word.

Thy Word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against Thee.”
Psalm 119:11

Number seven, get some help.

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down,   one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.

Ecclesiastes 4:9 NIV

So the first question is – when do you experience temptation?

The second diagnostic question is this – what is the payoff?

Verse 13

And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

-How is it that I overcome temptation?

             Because

“God is faithful.”

-There is a way out of every temptation. There is an exit.

-You have to make a pre-decision.

-The reason why we fall into temptation is because we forget who we are in Christ. We forget our identity.

Closing

What is the payoff for RESISTING TEMPTATION?
